The Bible and Transgender, Transsexual People
The Bible is an instrument of love, not an instrument of spiritual violence. As we study Biblical passages that might be about the activities of some transgendered people, we need to take care to ensure the Bible is being used only as an instrument of love. There is a tendency for people to use the Bible to condemn anything they do not understand or fear. That is contrary to the purpose of the Bible. The Bible is not to be used as a club to hurt those who are different than we are or to hurt those we are afraid of.
Texts should be understood within the context of the Bible and the context of the society in which they were written. We cannot fully understand the meaning of a text without understanding what it meant to the people who first heard the text.
Links to short discussions of some of the texts that might be related to transgendered people follows:
Deuteronomy 22:5
